Clipper Attachments, #'s, and guide combs.?

Can someone explain the sizes of each number thoroughly? I only have a rough idea. For starters tell me what size a #4 is. Tell me which number buzzes but doesn't show scalp or flesh.

Probably a number 6 or 7, I use an 8 on my son and his hair's about an inch long. A 2 or 3 is appropriate for trimming a beard or goatee. A 4 and 5 is what I use behind his ears and on the back of his head, he likes a closer cut there.

I have been looking for these everywhere and can't find one. Most places only go up to 1-1/4" but I need 2 inches. They are also known as spacer combs or guides. please help.

You can get them at Sally Beauty Supply Store. They Have a wide range of clipper attachments. Also it depends on what brand of clippers you have. Wahl, Andi's and Oyster all have website were you can buy them from.

How do you use the guide combs to cut hair with clippers?

I bought clippers with all the attachments on ebay without instructions. I don't want to shave my head, how do you use the guide combs to cut hair with clippers?
Thank you for your answer. I did figure out what the guides were for, but I didn't understand how to use them. Do you clip up or down against head? Flat against head as if you were shaving head?

Grab one of the attachments. Hold it up and look at the thickness of the plastic. That's how much hair will be left. The thinnest attachment is a #1 That will leave the hair with a shadow length. Just before bald. The fattest attachment should be a #8 or #6 that will leave the hair about an inch or an inch and a half long. These attachments are for mens cuts only.

Just start with the biggest attachment first. You can always cut more off. Start with the #8, work your way down to the thinner attachment.
